TAROT IS A RELATIONSHIP: 4 ways to approach the art of tarot
.... or 4 ways the tarot may be asking to work with you!
Dear You,
Tarot is a multi dimensional divination tool. There are many ways that one could approach and work with the art of tarot. It is like a fancy tool box with different kinds of hammers, wrenches and nails that you could work with — obviously it’s not that literal!
It is important to acknowledge that while some readers specialize in or choose to work with one way of working with tarot, options in the “tool box” can be and should be explored by any seeker! In fact, I encourage it. Experimenting with the various ways of reading tarot can help us discover what our niche is. Most importantly it can teach us about the potential ways the tarot might be asking us to approach our readings— which can change depending on the energy we’re in. As I always say, tarot is a relationship.
I’ve narrowed down four ways that one might approach working with tarot — or how tarot may calling to connect with us.
By presence - A card might ask you to be present in it’s energy or spirit. It may be an invitation to experience it and acknowledge where you are currently instead of acting or overthinking. The reader might pull card with the intention of presence. This feels like a cards spirit holding space for you, or simply reflecting what you energy you might be in currently.
In introspection - A card might ask us to dig deeper and be in a space of self-reflection for as long as we need to be. The reader might pull a card with the intention of introspection, and then more cards for further investigation. Introspection does not always bring instant clarification, but often encourages us to reflect a over a period of time.
By seeking (Asking questions) - A card’s spirit might be asking us a question — or multiple. The reader might pull cards asking questions about a subject or theme that is current in their life. Naturally, this tends to be the most common way of working with tarot.
By responding - A card’s spirit might ask us to listen to it and then respond based off of what we’re receiving. This is often not immediately — but when the timing is right. One might have to wait to respond. In this theme, the seeker invites the tarot to respond by pulling cards.
Because tarot is such a multi-dimensional practice, it is a strong possibility that a reader and their deck will use more than one of these approaches over the course of their personal practice. It is also possible that there are multiple ways you are being invited to work with a single reading. The practice of actively reading tarot is mutable and will often ask us to bend so we can provide the most spiritually honest reading that we are capable of giving — whether it is for ourselves or for others.
I wouldn’t stress too much about choosing a way to approach tarot — I would suggest experimenting and over time you will define a more resilient relationship with it’s craft.
